Mother's Day: A Song for Mama

You taught me everything and everything you've given me
I'll always keep it inside
You're the driving force in my life
There isn't anything or anyone that I could be
And it just wouldn't feel right
If I didn't have you by my side

You were there for me to love and care for me
When skys were gray
Whenever I was down you were always there to comfort me
No one else can be what you have been to me
You will always be
You will always be the girl in my life for all times

Mama
Mama you know I love you
oooooooooh you know I love you
Mama
Mama you're the queen of my heart
Your love is like tears from the stars
Mama I just want you to know
Loving you is like food to my soul
You're always there for me have always been around for me
Even when I was bad
You showed me right from my wrong
Yes you didAnd you took up for me when everyone was downing me
You always did understand
You gave me strength to go on
There were so many times looking back when I was so afraid
And then you come to me and tell me I could face anything
And no one else can do what you have done for me
You will always be the girl in my life

Mama
Mama you know I love you
oooooooooh you know I love you
Mama
Mama you're the queen of my heart
Your love is like tears from the stars
Mama
I just want you to know
Loving you is like food to my soul
Never gonna go a day without you
Fills me up just thinking about youI'll never go a day without my

Mama
Mama
Mama you know I love you
oooooooooh you know I love you
Mama
Mama you're the queen of my heart
Your love is like tears from the stars
Mama I just want you to know
Loving you is like food to my soul
Loving you is like food to my soul

On August 12th, 2006 we will be honoring the life and achievements of Dr. Richard T. Speakes.

Just 27 years old, Dr. Speakes has already dedicated nearly a decade of his time, love, money and wisdom towards the betterment of the community. He is the founder of Battle Ground Youth Ministries, which helps at-risk inner city youth and young adults. Dr. Speakes is having an awesome effect on both the young and old; equipping them with life skills, contributing personally towards their education and basic needs, counseling them and helping many go on to live productive , meaningful lives. His commitment and ability to meet people "where they are" and accept them for "who they are" is having a profound affect.Dr. Speakes' story is all the more inspiring-as he, once was victim of abuse- found strength to LIVE through it, LEARN from it and SURVIVE. An accomplished poet and author- his books have gone on to win multiple awards and sell countless copies, primarily through word of mouth publicity. His resolve to rise above and beyond has become addictive to those around him and reaches people on every social level. Those who have met him are amazed by his strength and applaud his courage. A 96 year old woman once told him how she admires him and that when she "grew up" she wanted to be just like him- a very humbling honor for such a young man, Dr. Speakes continues to serve in all humility and remains forever humbled.We-friends and family - are proud to announce this benefit in his honor. All proceeds raised will go towards providing ongoing services and spiritual wellness for the community.

Donations will be used to purchase a building and fund the outreach programs that have fed, clothed and provided aid for at-risk youth and those living with HIV/AIDS in the Philadelphia area.

Let's join together and support the vision of a young man who has already given so much!

Controversy with AIDS WALK Ft.Lauderdale 2006 and Sizzle Inc.

I would like to say this was forward to me by a concerned person in the black and latino gay community here is South Florida and i though i would take the opportunity to post transcript of both parties and see does Dwight Powell give a damn about his own community that he lives in instead of ATL where he isnt from. please post comments at the bottom of the article where the lil pencil is. Thanks and good reading people.

I was one of the few black men in the life that participated in both the Miami and Ft. Lauderdale Aids Walk with some of my good friends. When the walk was over we sat back and reflected on this great event. We all wondered why there was very few black people that participated in the walk. And even more, the VOICE of the black/latino population Clik/Sizzle Inc. So, I decided to write Mr. Dwight a letter. My one and only regret was not asking my friends if in fact the word "Colored" (as I thought I heard) was used to define us. I didnt realize how impacting the word "Colored" can upset some people. So, my apologies for possibly misqouting the founder/organizer of Aids Walk Ft. Lauderdale. Since Dwight houses his business in S. FLorida and lives here, I felt it should have been their good part to participate in a local community affair. Im not looking to start anything with him nor am I trying to bring any bad publicity to his company, but I feel deeply that they can learn from this, because I know I did. This is what I wrote Dwight and his response to me:

On 5/2/06 8:37
On Sunday April 30th, I had the privilege, good health and the great company of my most closest friends to endure a 5 K walk along the most beautiful streets of S. Florida, to show our support in the fight against AIDS. As, we all know, it affects the lives of many men, women and innocent children throughout the globe. The day could not have been any better, it was like a tropical vacation advertisement in a magazine. Soft clear blue skies, a wonderful nice breeze and at one point in the walk the view of the ocean. I had a moment where I said to myself that nothing will spoil my day, joining my community on a walk in support of so many people. There were several celebrity speakers & activist and one unforgettable poet (Asha Bandele) who had the entire crowd on there feet giving her a thunderous applause, after one of her magnificent poetry readings. When the founder of AIDS Walk Ft. Lauderdale gave his speech, he said something that woke up the inner thoughts that I had been thinking of in the back of my mind. The founder mentioned that this walk could be more effective but he hears that "colored people are in denial", instantly I applauded that statement. I looked around and said to myself where are the colored people? Where is Sizzle/Clikque? Could it be that everyone is so unraveled by what is going to occur in a few weeks that they could not have taken a half a day to show their support? Sizzle/Clikque offered to be in Atlanta's gay pride and you were not accepted. You fought and spread the word to our community about your disappointment, I supported you sending an email to Donna . So, why did Sizzle/Clikque not participate in an event that took part in their own back yard? An event for the cause in which you are now sending emails to poll on who is responsible for the AIDS epidemic. Which leads me to question your integrity, your reason for being a voice for Black/Latino Gays, Lesbians, Bisexuals and Transgendered in OUR community. Are you for profit gain only or are you truly interested in investing in your support for a cause that ravages our friends and families?I plead with you that you become more involved within our community where you are generating more awareness in this fight; not just in your magazine, but in OUR community locally. I would be more than willing to represent your organization and gather the necessary reinforcements to aid in such a task.Significantly concerned,AngelDwights response:Who are you to question my integrity? You don’t know me or my history. What you are doing now, I’ve done many years ago. I have done my share of community service. Clik Magazine nor Sizzle Miami Inc are community base, non-profit, or charity establishment. Both are businesses. In 2006, you are in support of someone, in a public forum using the word “colored” to reference a group of people is unforgivable. At Clik I produce a monthly lifestyle publication, and have more than enough work that keeps me busy. There are people that do what you do. My responsibility to the Black gay community is to produce the best publication possible. We are not spokes people for our community. You ask why did we not participate. Well for one, I didn’t know about it. And if I didn’t know about it, I am quite sure that many of the other “colored” people didn’t know about it either. However, I am sure that they [organizers] advertised their events in the non-colored publications and in the non-colored communities. Maybe if they did a bit more to reach out to that community [colored], there would be more support. This year we will have a team for AID Atlanta – they sought us out and asked us to participate. I put the message of HIV/AIDS out there in each of my magazine. Without being too preachy, we do what we can to help get the information around. You mentioned my poll on the site. Yes we do care, our June issue is dedicated to HIV/AIDS and Phil Wilson from the Black AIDS Institute is on the cover. The poll is just one of a few topics in the magazine. You see you are barking up the wrong tree. Next time you want to deal with an issue with me, let me suggest that you use a phone. Yes, Sizzle is about business, that’s it. All about business. Showing our guest a great time while here in Miami and making money like most businesses attempt to do... Like you are attempting to do on Fridays and in your other ventures.I have done the AIDS WALK thing, I have done the community thing, and like I said I am not an activist, nor do I care to be one. I am a businessman with goals of producing a quality publication and events. You do your job and I will do mine. Please NO NOT EVER refer to me as “colored people” again. You don’t know me like that.Dwight--

Person of the Week: Shelton Jackson and Jonathan Perry

Hey these two guys are awesome people and i am glad to call them friends. They have done outstanding advocacy work on behalf of the 1.1 million people living with HIV/AIDS in the United States.

Shelton Jackson a 29 year old HIV positive black gay male is an author who has just completed his second book entitled The Dawn of a New Day. Soon after entering college, Shelton met and fell in love with someone who taught him about the love of a person, how to give with no external expectations, and to accept other’s limitations. Shelton and Conan had their problems like other couples, or so they thought until Conan’s bout with an unrelenting cold changed their world. Conan was diagnosed with AIDS. No longer was money, bills, jealousy or housekeeping, etc. of any importance. The idea of loosing a life partner put things in perspective. Immortality and time became the issues. Nevertheless, the decisions that he made as a naïve boy of nineteen to prove his endless requited love, guided him through the paths that fostered him into the man he is presently. Shelton is active in the fight to abolish this deadly disease. Shelton is determined not to let another child or an adult to make the same uninformed decisions that he made. He teaches others how to protect themselves. His lectures contain information regarding those most at risk and he lets others know that they do not have to die to prove that they can love or be loved.

Jonathan Perry also 29 year old HIV positive black gay male who has done tireless work for the HIV/AIDS Community, here is what Jonathan have to say about living with HIV/AIDS.It never fails. No matter where I go or what I am doing people want to know why I am so candid about my life, especially my HIV status. I am a strong individual, so it is certainly not about "the how" and more about "the why" of it all. I know I didn't have to do it, but I am so glad I did.
You see, I have this philosophy that has proven an easier standard by which to live than not. I keep my skeletons on the front door so when people begin rambling [through my closets] all they will find are my clothes. I keep very little of my life a secret. The reason behind my practice is duplicitous. One, if there are no secret, there is no scandal; and two, if I take off my mask, you will take off yours.Nelson Mandela once said, "Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness that frightens us most. We ask ourselves, "Who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented, and famous?" Actually, who are you not to be? You are a child of God. Your playing small does not serve the world. There is nothing enlightened about shrinking so that people won't feel insecure around you...And when we let our own light shine, we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same. As we are liberated from our own fear, our presence automatically liberates others."My amenability to live and walk in my truth and moreover, to SHARE my life inspires others to want to do the same. As I overcome the pain of rejection and almost insufferable heartlessness inflicted by the sincerely ignorant and conscientiously stupid of our free thinking society, other people will see that it is possible and indeed ok to be what and who you are without any admission of error whatsoever.I am not afforded the luxury of a thick skin, because then I can’t see out and you can't see in.

More Gay Bashing from the Pulpit

Lets say your in Sunday morning church and the pastor of the church starts to preach on homosexuality in the church, how would you take offense to the following sermon below where Bishop Alfred Owens of Greater Mount Calvary Church in Washington D.C. had this sermon he spoke on Palm Sunday which was April 9, the sunday before Easter. Gay,Straight,Bisexual everyone has the right to believe in God and worship God in their own way for Pastors to keep constantly down grading the LGBT community is wrong and it needs to stop.

"All those brothers who think that church is for punks and church is for sissies. You don't know the word of God. The church is never for punks or sissies. You are a real man if you can stand up and make a commitment to Jesus Christ. It takes a real man to confess Jesus as Lord and Savior. I'm not talking about no faggot or no sissy. I mean a real man who has made up their mind ... Wait a minute! Let all the real men come on down here and take a bow. All the real men—I'm talking about the straight men.You ain’t funny and you ain’t cranky, but you're straight. Come on down here and walk around and praise God that you are straight. Thank him that you're straight. All the straight men that's proud to be a Christian, that's proud to be a man of God. I'm proud of what God made me. Any proud men in the room?"

"Owens has a history of homophobic sermons" and adds that many gay men attend the church and were extremely uncomfortable during the sermon. One attendee says that "he and 'about 20' other closeted gay men in the crowd, felt they had no choice but to join Owens’ spontaneous celebration of straightness." Actually they do have a choice: If the bishop's rhetoric makes them that uncomfortable, they may want to re-think their membership and join a more inclusive church like Unity, MCC or the UCC. But that's another story ...Last summer, you'll recall the Rev. Willie Wilson created a national uproar after a dramatic anti-gay sermon where he warned that lesbianism was about to “take over our community.”

Harlem Choir Sex Abuse Victim Speaks Out

For years, the boy at the center of the sexual abuse scandal that shook the Boys Choir of Harlem was referred to only as "Student A" or "the choirboy victim."

Now he just wants to be called by his name, David Pinks.

Pinks, once held captive by shame and fear, no longer fears the abuse will "stain" or "taint" his manhood, and he wants other sexual abuse victims, especially boys and men, to talk openly about their own ordeals.

"I'm not afraid anymore because I know I didn't do anything wrong," Pinks said in an interview with The Associated Press. "That embarrassment and shame that were there — that demon is not going to hold me back. I'm able to speak out.

"There's a lot of other people out there going through the same situation I've been through and maybe even worse," he said. "They need that voice. I'll be that voice."

Even at 20 years old and 6 feet 2 inches tall, Pinks says he became "petrified" recently when he thought he spotted Frank Jones Jr., who sexually abused him starting at age 12. His heartbeat quickens whenever he smells the cologne or lotion his abuser wore.

"When I think of Jones I don't think of now," he says. "My mind is still when I was 12, 13. I still know how strong he is and what he's capable of."

Five years after Pinks' revelations, the choir he left also is struggling to recover. It once performed at the White House and Vatican and on the soundtracks of the films "Malcolm X" and "Glory."

Now with a reduced, mostly volunteer staff, the choir of 50 boys, which was evicted from its home, performs Saturday night at Jazz at Lincoln Center.

In 2001, when Pinks was 15, he told choir officials that he had been abused by Jones, who directed the choir's counseling and summer camp and chaperoned members on trips for more than two decades. But choir leaders — including founder and chief executive Walter Turnbull and his vice president and brother Horace Turnbull — did nothing, Pinks and investigators maintain.

Pinks then told his mother, who notified police. In late 2002, Jones was convicted of 24 counts of sexually abusing the student and sentenced to two years in prison.

In 2003, city investigators concluded that the Turnbulls "failed to report serious allegations of abuse" of Pinks by Jones. Moreover, the investigative report said, the Turnbulls continued to allow him to be near students.

Walter Turnbull, who remains chief conductor, called what happened to Pinks "very unfortunate."

"We have done over the years all the things that we could to make sure that we did the best thing, the right thing," said Turnbull, who said he has had no contact with Jones, now 56. "The regret that I have is that David felt he was not treated correctly."

Jones' attorney, Theodore Goldbergh, said his client still insists he did nothing wrong. The attorney said Jones was especially attentive to Pinks because the young man had a "strained" relationship with his family.

Jones, along with the Turnbulls, the city and others, now faces a civil lawsuit filed by Pinks. As for the choir, it is millions of dollars in debt and had to relocate to a Harlem church after the city evicted it from a public school.

Pinks said he wants to see the choir survive — but without Turnbull as its leader.

"I didn't want the choir to suffer," said Pinks, who spoke out publicly for the first time on "Nightline" in March. "It's not the choir; it was the leaders. Those are the people I went to. They're the people who turned a blind eye. They overlook what happened to me and most likely happened to other students."

Pinks stopped attending City College, where he was studying music, two semesters ago. He spends much of his time in his home studio in Harlem, focused on producing for rap and R&B artists.

Despite counseling, he still has nightmares in which Jones kills him, he said. Still, he said he won't allow such demons to hold him back.

"My main goal is to help other children who have this similar situation," said Pinks, who wants to someday start an organization for abused children.

"A lot of times we don't have anybody to talk to. If I can be the voice that they can relate to, that they can hear, that brings me a lot of joy."

Earl Woods Dead at 74

The father of golfer Eldrick " Tiger" Woods passed away on wednesday morning after a long battle with cancer in his California home, he was 74. Earl Woods was the driving force that made Tiger Woods the golfer he is today, they shared such a closeness for one another, that most father/son duo in the game of golf usual share with one another since they are always around each other. Here is a statement that tiger woods posted on his website www.tigerwoods.com

"I’m very saddened to share the news of my father’s passing at home early this morning. My dad was my best friend and greatest role model, and I will miss him deeply. I’m overwhelmed when I think of all of the great things he accomplished in his life. He was an amazing dad, coach, mentor, soldier, husband and friend. I wouldn’t be where I am today without him, and I’m honored to continue his legacy of sharing and caring. Thank you to all who are sending condolences to my family and our Foundation. We are truly blessed to have so many who care during this difficult time."

Reflections

Looking back on life and i am truly blessed, i must say i have had a bumpy road to adulthood but everything that has happen in my life good and bad has happen for a reason. I have finally realized that i cant changed the world or change the people i have come across in my walk in life, all i can do is say a little prayer and let life take its course. Because as one person told me its only you out there in this world when its all said and done. Is it good to be surrounded by a host of friends and loved ones when eventually in the end it will only be you in the end. Just a reflection of life's journey. Over the weekend i was in tampa and i was listening to Boyz II Men my all-time favorite male group and i came across this song i havent heard in a while off of their " Evolution" CD "Can You Stand The Rain."

Can You Stand The Rain
On a perfect day
I know that I can count on you
When that's not possible
Tell me, can you weather the storm
Cause I need somebody who will stand by me
Through the good times and bad times
She will always, always be right there.

[Chorus: ]
Sunny days, everybody loves them
Tell me
Can you stand the rain
Storms will come
This we know for sure
Can you stand the rain.

Love unconditional
I'm not asking this of you
We've got to make it last
I'll do whatever needs to be done
Cause I need somebody who will stand by me
When it's time she won't run
She will always, always be right there.

[Chorus]
Can you stand the rain [4 times]
No pressure, no pressure from me baby
Cause I want you
And I need you
And I love you
Will you be there for me
Can you stand the rain [6 times]
